If your phone got stolen, this is what you need to do

No one likes it if his/her phone gets stolen. The situation is most times very hard to bear and some people even break down in tears due to the contents they’ve lost as a result of the incident.
Below are the things you should do if your phone gets stolen from your house, school, work, public places, etc:

  • Try and relax: It’s very hard to calm down when a situation like this occurs. But you must understand that if you allow yourself to fuel up with anger, you may never recover your device. The first thing you should do when your phone gets stolen is to calm down.
  • Ask: Ask the people you see around the area where the incident happened if they saw the person who took your device. If you didn’t get anything useful from that, then don’t worry and still be calm.
  • Think: Now think of the people you suspect may have taken it. If you don’t have any suspects, it’s still very okay. Think of the people who left the place after your device got stolen. Most times, the thief will run away with your device after he/she have taken it.
  • Use Google tracker: If you’re lucky enough to be using Google services and you had signed in with any of their platforms (YouTube, Gmail, Google photos, etc) before your phone got stolen, you can borrow a phone from your neighbour to search for your phone. To search for your stolen phone, go to android.com and sign into your Google account. Click on "lost device" and the map will show you where your phone is.
  • Call the police: It’s always advisable to get the police involved. Do not go with your friends or with a mob because if things happen to turn into a jungle justice, you will be arrested for that. Call the police and let them follow you to the place. When you get there, identify your phone and let the police arrest the thief.
  • No tracker: if you don’t have a tracker, you can either go straight to the police or use your IMEI number. Take your IMEI number to FIR (first information report). They will help you track the phone.

Please, we urge each and every one of you to be careful and security conscious with your phone. Not every neighbour is a good person.
